Two more MOPEs gravely offended in most sensitive country on earth

The awesome ability of people in Northern Ireland to become offended at the most trivial perceived slight has been exhibited once again, as two customers are purportedly to sue the Hilton Hotel alleging that its staff refused to show last month’s all Ireland Gaelic Football final.

Whether the hotel actually did show the final or not appears to be disputed. Although, frankly the facts are neither here nor there. It is the notion that a 5 star hotel should not have discretion to decide which programmes are convivial to the ambience it wishes to create and which are not, that is simply outrageous.

More laughable still is the suggestion that declining to show something on television comprises an “affront” to anyone’s “dignity and national identity”. Are the two litigants the biggest MOPEs in the history of MOPEry?

Assuming (and it's fair to assume) that the match was not blocked out on TVs in guests’ bedrooms, why would anyone choose to visit the Hilton Hotel in order to watch a sport’s match? Almost every public house in Belfast showed the Gaelic that day.

Hopefully this nonsense reaches court so that the judge can laugh it back out again and demand the hotel’s expenses be covered by these two chancers.

Utterly pathetic.

As this story is reported in the "Indo", Chekov I would tend to take it with a pinch of salt. I haven't seen it reported in the quality papers or anywhere else for that matter - presumably because even if it is true it's totally un-newsworthy. That said, if it is true the individual who made the complaint should get a life. He's obviously not a Tyrone supporter as he'd be too busy celebrating. As for the chances of it going to court, no solicitor in their right mind would take this case seriously.

You've not been slow to pick up on a couple of the minor controversies arising from Tyrone's All-Ireland campaign, but you've been strangely silent on the match itself and the end result. I know you're not noted for either your love of GAA or the geographical area located to the left of Lough Neagh, but you should at least be pleased that a Northern Irish team has returned from Dublin victorious and that Sam has triumphantly come back to the UK. ;-)

He's obviously not a GAA supporter. Firstly, he was in the Hilton Hotel. No self respecting fan I've ever met would frequent such a high falutin place! Secondly, he is from Belfast. I've lived here for about three and a half years now (not all that far from where this man lives incidentally) and it appears the natives are less interested in the GAA and more intrigued by the green half of the sectarian Old Firm rivalry. In saying that, you can't really blame them for not giving a damn. Antrim are rubbish.

Perhaps he's from Armagh...

About as pleased as I was when Linfield brought the Setanta Cup to Belfast and that's not pleased! ;-)
