Sitting comfortably in our own stable Western political consensus it is very easy to be critiical of Russia under Putin, until that is, we are reminded of the fragility of that consensus by the worldwide economic turmoil that is threatening to tear Greek society apart.

When you also consider that Ireland and Britain (and Spain and Italy et al) are massively overborrowed and reliant on jittery money markets to continue to pay for their basic services then we, in large swathes of the West can, of late, perhaps begin to ponder how our own country might react to the threat of a breakdown in social cohesion.

In such times, stability, understandably, becomes the only show in town.

The Paddy Power odds (Munster are 3/10), not suprisngly suggest a home win and Munster(excepting their last performance away to Northampton) have not looked impressive this year in the Heineken Cup. An Ulster win would really shake up, not just Irish rugby, but European rugby and would be seen as confirmation of Munster's decline as a major European force.

I am going with a home win - but any (further) injuries for Munster of key personnel would tip the balance towards Ulster. As you say if Ulster do win then they will have a 'home' semi in Dublin - that would probably make them favourites no matter who they played.

ps Expecting the worst in Paris tomorrow - unless the game is cancelled because of a frozen pitch.

afraid of going to Thomond park and looking for the win. If they can win

I was wondering whether, in a year of so many anniversaries at home (ie: Home Rule Bill, Titanic), you were going to include something about Napoleon's defeat at the hands of the Russians in 1812? One brilliant read on the subject is Adam Zamoyski's "1812: Napoleon's March on Moscow", a work which I would greatly recommend.

Whatever misgivings one might have about the Russian Tsarist government at that time, the defeat of Napoleon's armies is a feat of which Russians may feel justifiably proud.

Interesting but I think that it may sometimes be too easy to read a bit too deeply into the statistics. My girlfriend, for example, identifies herself as English and would probably vote to leave the EU if there was a referendum. Yet she is the least nationalist person I have ever met.

re. interesting to know what LibDems MPs think of a transaction tax and what the Labour MPs think. If Libdems and Labour row in behind the Tories then Davey C should be relativley relaxed. The problem for 'left wing' parties is that they need to be careful of biting/taxing the hand that feeds them as well as watchful what their supporters think.

Yes it does help them and the IMF flag of convenience route is much the better of the 2 bad options(for them).

What is entirely predictable but extremely dangerous for the British economy is that even given the seriousness of the situation 'playing poltics' is to the fore by both Tories and Labour.

It seems that most of Italy's debt has been rolled over from before the Euro entry and their public expenditure is less lavish than in Britain - they are a solvent and wealthy country in need of a re-mortgage - surely a job for the IMF. Arguably the Euro has been a success for Italy.

What is annoying about a lot of the media coverage e.g. the BBC, is that they take their (unquestioning) line from political statements issued by British politicians who have their own poltical reputations (understandably)as prioirty number one.

The cunning Tory plan is to tap into anti Euro sentiment and place the blame for all Britian's current economic woes at the door of the Europeans and the previous (Labour) government. The Labour plan is to ignore Europe and their own legacy and concentrate on blaming the Tories.
